Well, it had a nice long run, but now it is being reported that Sony is closing Optiarc Inc., the subsidiary that manufactures optical disc drives for PCs and other devices. Officials say that the reason is due to “fierce competition” that forced prices down.
This caused the business to operate at a loss despite controlling roughly 15 percent of the market. They will be winding up operations by March of next year, when they will offer around 400 employees earlyretirement and others will be moved to other areas of the business. At least those employees will be taken care of.
The company will continue to manufacture Blu-Ray and DVD player as part of its Device SolutionsDivision however, so don’t worry.
